Book Review: The Darkest Veil

Image
Catherine Cavendish's The Darkest Veil begins when Alice Lorrimer moves into an old house in a new town and quickly bonds with her new flatmates. There's something strange about her new home however, and it isn't long before the other girls tell about odd occurrences in one of the house's bedrooms. A few of the girls decide to use a ouija board to contact any spirits that might be about, and, since ouija boards in horror fiction are never a good idea, all hell soon breaks loose. I'll admit this one started a little slow for me, and I originally felt the dialogue to be a little clunky. I soon got into the groove of it though and ended up really enjoying it. I really loved the period setting (1970's) and came to really care about our main characters. This is a spooky, quick read, perfect for fans of haunted house stories and tales of the occult. I will definitely be checking out more by Catherine Cavendish.
