Happy New Year! Bloody New Year & New Year's Evil

Happy New Year! How did you celebrate? I rang in the year with some champagne and a couple of seasonal horror movies, Bloody New Year and the absolutely awfully titled New Year's Evil.

Bloody New Year

I don't recall this chick actually
being in the movie.

Actually, despite the title, Bloody New Year doesn't really take place on New Year's. It actually takes place in the summer when some "young" people wash up on an island shore after their boat sinks. They find a hotel on the island that is decorated for Christmas/New Year's and promptly make themselves at home. (I mean, I know every time I wander into a strange building, the first thing I do is take a bath and dress myself in someone else's clothing, but some people might find that kind of behavior a little weird). Strange things begin happening, like ghostly foot prints, laughter, a banister attacking a character, and a seaweed monster appearing out of nowhere. Apparently this is all due to the island being stuck in a time loop where it is forever New Year's Eve 1959, all thanks to some government experiment involving invisible airplanes...or something. To be honest, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but that's okay. British exploitation director Norman J. Warren was not known for award winning caliber film making, but there's a lot of fun to be add in the gleeful insanity (or inanity) on hand here. Just don't expect any scares, cohesive plot, or blood for that matter.

New Year's Evil

New Year's Evil actually does take place on New Year's Eve, and the plot center on famous L.A. DJ, Diane Sullivan (Roz Killy, a.k.a. Pinky Tuscadero from Happy Days) hosting what looks like the most boring New Year's Eve party/countdown in history while getting calls from a killer who is murdering someone every time the clock strikes midnight somewhere in the U.S. The police think he intends for Diane to be his final victim. New Year's Evil is a lot more tightly paced and well plotted than Bloody New Year, but suffers from a pretty distasteful streak of misogyny and an unlikable final girl who doesn't really get to be the hero of her own story. However, I still liked it a lot better than I expected, and it made a good holiday pairing with the much zanier Bloody New Year.

Anyway, cheers everyone and a late Happy New Year's! I hope you had more fun than the characters in these two films. Here's a toast to 2018! Hopefully, it will be is a great year for horror.

Happy bloody New Year!
