Here's one thing about me:
I love lists.
I love making lists; I love reading other people's lists. I find list making soothing and fun. So, I'm going to write a list. In honor of my blog's name, I was going to make a list of my favorite final girls. However, I think there are many more interesting women characters in horror besides just the final girls. In fact, often times the best female characters in a movie, in my opinion, don't fit into the specific definition of "final girl." They're either survivors, but not technically "final girls," or they are victims who fall prey to the killer (whether it be human, ghost, demon, or something else). In some cases, these fascinating women are even the killers themselves.
This is going to be a long list, so I'll probably divide it into several different posts. Also, I know I will probably leave more than a few amazing characters out, and if this blog actually proves successful (i.e. someone other than me reads it), maybe I'll make another list someday with reader input. We'll see.
Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), Halloween series
 |
| The ultimate Final Girl. |
Annie (Nancy Loomis), Halloween
 |
Annie is the perfect "best friend." She's got sarcasm and sass and a death scene that left me screaming at my television.
"The car was locked! Don't get in! Look behind you!" |
Tina (Wendy Kaplan), Halloween 5
 |
| You either love or hate her. I happen to love her. |
Taryn (Jennifer Rubin), A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
Barb (Margot Kidder), Black Christmas
Angela* (Felissa Rose), Sleepaway Camp
 |
| *Yes, yes, I know. |
Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Scream series
 |
| Jamie Lee's most worthy successor. |
Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox), Scream series
 |
| The Scream series' other Final Girl, Gale can be selfish and annoying, but she always comes through when her friends need her and is endlessly entertaining to watch. |
Tatum Riley (Rose McGowan), Scream
Cassidy (Briana Evigan), Sorority Row
Selene (Kate Beckinsale), Underworld series
 |
| The ultimate kickass vampire heroine. We need less Twilight vampires, more women like Selene, who, instead of constantly needing rescuing (cough Bella cough) can often be found saving the day for the men around her. |
Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), Aliens series
 |
| It's Ripley. No further explanation needed. |
Evelyn (Famke Janssen), House on Haunted Hill
 |
| So deliciously evil. Famke Janssen oozes dangerous sexuality in all of her roles, but this is one of my favorites. |
Alice (Mila Jovovich), Resident Evil series
 |
| A worthy successor to Ripley. |
Rain Ocampo (Michelle Rodriguez), Resident Evil series
 |
| Am I the only one who thought Rain and Alice would have made a great couple? |
Baby Firefly (Sheri Moon Zombie), House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil's Rejects
 |
| Sexy, evil, and batshit crazy. |
Ginger (Katherine Isabelle), Ginger Snaps series
Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz), The Mummy series
 |
| Rachel Weisz's Evelyn is smart and brave and makes me proud to be a librarian. |
Leah (Allison Scagliotti), Chastity Bites
 |
| Highly underrated film. Highly underrated heroine. |
Lotte (MyAnna Buring), Lesbian Vampire Killers
