Snowy Christmas Horror Movies

Image
I've been covering winter horror films recently, so I thought I'd take this time on Christmas Eve's Eve to cover some Christmas horror movies that fit into that category. Gremlins Gremlins has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. It's the perfect horror movie for the whole family to enjoy and features a great snowy atmosphere that amazes with its beauty even as the Gremlins wreak havoc. The movie also features Gizmo, who is just about the cutest thing ever. Black Christmas The perfect holiday slasher. I watch it every year. Billy is easily one of the creepiest killers ever put to film. Black Christmas (2006 remake) I was really disappointed when I first saw this remake, but over time, it's grown on me. It still doesn't hold a Christmas candle to the original, but it's fun in its own way and features great snowy atmosphere. Silent Night, Deadly Night This controversial slasher is really a lot of fun once it gets going. Whi...

Winter Horror Part 2

Shredder Terrible box art A lot of people really don't like this movie, and I honestly understand why. It's clearly just a late-to-the-game post-Scream slasher cash grab with bad acting, paper thin and (generally) unlikable characters, and a painfully not scary killer (whose motive appears to be that they prefer skiing to snowboarding...). Still, I enjoyed it. There was an interesting portrayal of female friendship, one that deserves a more in depth review than I plan on giving today, and a few good kills, plus that snowy setting I always love. Sure it's inept and soulless, but it's a goofy and fun watch if you keep your expectations in check. Dreamcatcher Dreamcatcher is a weird film. Based on the novel Stephen King wrote while recuperating from an accident that almost took his life, it's expectedly uneven. Still, there are a few high points, including the acting. The central cast of four (played marvelously by Thomas Jane, Timothy Olyphant, Jason Lee, ...

Winter Horror

Now that it's finally getting colder outside (I love Autumn and Winter and absolutely loathe Summer - I'm aware that's kinda weird), it's the perfect time to check out some snowy, wintery horror movies. Need some ideas? I've got a few: (Note: I am excluding specifically Christmas themed horror movies as I'll probably do a post specifically on them some time next month.) Cold Prey Cold Prey (Fritt Vilt) is a Norwegian slasher film from 2006. Set at an abandoned ski resort, it features a creepy killer, brutal kills, and a pretty awesome final girl in Jannicke (Ingrid Bolso Berdal). It's also genuinely intense and suspenseful. Cold Prey was followed by both a sequel and a prequel, both of which I've heard good things about, although I have yet to watch them Ravenous I raved about this period piece horror film here . It's not nearly as well known as it should be, so check it out and spread the word. The Thing from Another World, The Thin...

Halloween Reading

Image
Want some good seasonal reading to get into the Halloween mood? Here are some of my top picks for October. Usher's Passing by Robert McCammon One of my absolute favorite novels, Usher's Passing tells the story of the Usher family, descendants of Poe's Ushers, as they prepare for the family patriarch's death. Sinister events begin occurring around the family's North Carolina estate, as the heirs to the family fortune (and curse) gather. McCammon's novel takes place in October and really captures the feel of the season. A Night in the Lonesome October by Roger Zelazney A new favorite, A Night in the Lonesome October (illustrated by Gahan Wilson), is set in the Victorian era and features characters such as Jack the Ripper, Count Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, Larry Talbot, and Sherlock Holmes. The story is narrated by Jack's familiar, Snuff, a very good dog, who is helping his Master prepare to fight the attempted release of the Old Ones into ...
